Another great line up of two of the best blues acts in the South West, followed by a blues jam session. The live music starts pretty sharp after 7.30pm, as we have three sets to fit in before the end of the night around 11pm. This time we have Southern Fried Groove Queens and Ritchie Lane
Southern Fried Groove Queens
…is a Mississippi hill country/delta blues inspired duo, with Lee Hall on Guitar/Vocals (Datura Roots Collective) & renowned Blues drummer Lucy Piper, daughter of the late Blues musician, Julian Piper.
From the ‘Deep South’ of the UK, cooked to perfection using a traditional recipe passed down through generations, SFGQ provide a heavy kick & grooves that will make you want to move.
The duo plays their take on the likes of RL Burnside, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson and many more. With Lee’s haunting vocals and energetic slide playing, and Lucy’s infectious hypnotic drumming, this is a band not to be missed.
Ritchie Lane
…has played and toured across the UK, Europe and beyond in the last 30 years playing venues as diverse as the legendary but diminutive Ain’t Nothin’ But… in Central London to the beautiful Municipal Hall at Colne as part of the Great British Rhythm and Blues festival. He signed to Sticky records with The Freeze in the late 1990s and has played for many other bands on the London circuit and here in the south west with The Primitive Noise Band. His solo show consists of a mix of original material and covers in a bluesy roots style played on a mix of acoustic and resonator guitars.
“No gimmicks just a man and his guitar and voice.”
“Majestic command on the guitar. great stage presence, blistering guitar. If James Dean had sung the blues it would have sounded like this!” Bill Smith, Blues In Britain
In March 2009 the editor of Guitar Player Magazine (USA) picked Ritchie as one of their Big Eight Players.
The Blues jam follows – usually featuring some of the musicians from the bands above, with other great local players. If you’re interested in playing, contact mary.caffrey49@gmail.com
