This looks set to be an extraordinary evening of music, words, and art with a performance of Joseph Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ.

This deeply moving event, presented by Ambrosian Strings, promises to be a highlight of the Easter season, blending classical music with contemporary art and spoken word in a unique and immersive experience.

Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ is a profound musical meditation on the final utterances of Jesus on the cross, originally composed in 1786. The piece will be performed by Ambrosian Strings, a quintet of top-level professional musicians renowned for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. Their rendition of Haydn’s masterpiece will bring the composer’s intricate and heartfelt music to life, offering a fitting tribute to the Easter season.

Complementing the music, the event will feature seven original artworks by Saatchi artist Sarah Beckett, each corresponding to one of the seven movements of Haydn’s composition. Beckett, inspired by the emotional intensity of the music, immersed herself in Haydn’s work to create these striking pieces. Her artwork will be displayed on the Arts centre’s movie screen, allowing the audience to experience the visual and musical elements in perfect harmony.

Garth Bardsley will read poetry by Mark Strand, whose reflections will weave together the music and art, creating a multi-sensory journey through the themes of sacrifice, redemption, and hope.

This event is a unique opportunity to experience Haydn’s timeless work in a new light, with the exceptional talents of Ambrosian Strings, Sarah Beckett, and Mark Strand. It’s a perfect way to reflect on the meaning of Easter.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of artistry and spirituality this Easter season.

See Access, Tickets & Finding Us for more about why there are three ticket prices, plus other useful info about coming to events at Ashburton Arts Centre: getting here, parking, loos, PA tickets, etc.

* We usually have three ticket prices – please pay what you can. If you can pay the full price, that’s great. If choosing a cheaper ticket allows you to come to more things, then please do! Ticket receipts are split between the artists (it’s usually their livelihood!) and the arts centre (keeps the place going). Except on the rare occasions when we have a sellout gig on our hands, it’s always better to have someone here in the audience than an empty seat, so genuinely, please pay whatever you can.
