FLAMENCO – RAÍCES – Rebeca Ortega from Spain

Join us for a night of passion, rhythm, and intensity – an unforgettable authentic flamenco performance by Seville’s elegant and accomplished dancer, Rebeca Ortega, UK’s leading flamenco guitarist Ramón Ruiz, accompanied by the deeply soulful voice of Natalia Marín also from Seville.

This is a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Andalusia, with traditional and modern flamenco artistry.  Rebeca writes, “From the deepest roots of flamenco, this theatrically spun dance show is born from the tradition of flamenco culture, shaped by the luminosity of the alegrías, the depth of the taranto and seguiriya, the rhythms of the tangos and bulerías and the jondura of the soleá and the farruca.”

Rebeca Ortega Flamenco Company

Rebeca Ortega flamenco company has captivated international audiences with the recent production “RAÍCES”, finalist in the “Madroño” Young Dance Creators Contest and financed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Madrid network of theaters.

The production has travelled throughout all of Europe, as well as to stages as far away as China, Gabon, Ethiopia, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, offering performances and master classes, and is delighted to come to The Barbican for an unmissable night.

“[I am] excited for our return to Ashburton Arts Centre! Last year was magical in this stunning town and venue, and I anticipate another memorable performance on Saturday 22nd of June.” Rebeca Ortega

“She has it all: Beauty, a stylised and flexible body, elegance, finesse, charisma, rhythmic sense that prints a way of dancing with its own identity. Rebeca Ortega’s dance defines her…” Aquí Madrid

“…she is the imperious, dancing focal point, her steps beating furious, intricate tattoos under a long train that she swishes, lifts and manoeuvres with marvellous dexterity and no little significance…” Herald Scotland

Rebecca Ortega

Rebeca is a Spanish flamenco dancer and director who has performed workshops across the world. She has trained extensively in flamenco, classical Spanish dance, ballet, and contemporary dance in Seville and the most recognised flamenco schools, Madrid’s Amor de Dios and Seville’s Flamenco Danza.

Aged 19, Rebeca began her professional career, and for four years she performed and taught flamenco in the UK while completing her university studies, which led her to create, direct, and choreograph the group “Nottingham Flamenquitas”. From that moment, she hasn’t stopped taking her dance to the world with her company, as well as collaborating with famed companies: La Tati, Ricardo García, PATÁX, Ramón Ruiz, or with circus artist, Villads Bugge Bang.

Flamenco reflects the history, diversity, and spirit of Spain and its people. It’s a form of song, dance, and guitar music that originated in the Andalusian Roma of southern Spain. Flamenco is intense and passionate, expressing a range of emotions, from joy and celebration to sorrow and despair.  Flamenco dance is a captivating art form that combines grace, strength, and rhythm; with intricate footwork, expressive hand movements, and dramatic gestures.

Flamenco Guitar Workshop with Ramón Ruiz: 2.30pm – 4.30pm

This is a rare chance to work closely with a real master of the art of playing flamenco guitar. It’s aimed at all levels. Participants will work on their technique, falseta, and variations to accompany the dancing and singing. For the last 15 minutes, all participants will join flamenco dancer, Rebeca Ortega and her group class to practice all together.

Ramón Ruiz
Ramón is the UK’s leading flamenco guitarist. He loves to share his art and passion for flamenco with anyone who’s curious.

Born in Granada and trained in Seville’s renowned flamenco tablao, Los Gallos, by a generation of world-famous flamenco artists who are no longer with us, Ramón continues developing his art from London, although Andalusia will always be his home.
