This Devon-based ensemble is led by violinist Patricia Calnan, who played for years with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner. This is part of the orchestra’s first season of concerts under the baton of its new conductor, Keith Marshall.
Fergus McCready, oboe
Fergus is currently on trial for Principal Oboe vacancies with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. Through this he is gaining memorable experiences performing works such as Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty.
Additionally, Fergus has enjoyed playing guest Principal with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of St Martins in The Fields. Fergus has also freelanced with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and played on multiple CD recordings with Sinfonia of London.
Having studied with Chris Cowie, Tom Blomfield and Ian Hardwick, Fergus concluded his time at the Royal Academy of Music last July having completed his MA degree with distinction and being awarded DipRAM, following his first-class honours BMus degree. During his time at RAM, Fergus won the Leila Bull Oboe Prize, the Woodwind Postgraduate Prize, the Regency Award, and the Bicentenary Award.
Growing up in Devon, Fergus gained a great passion for the outdoors. When he’s not playing the oboe or making reeds, he enjoys going back home to surf the Southwest Coastline and run on the trails of Dartmoor.
Keith Marshall, conductor
Keith began his musical education as a chorister at Birmingham Cathedral. He read music at Caius College Cambridge, later studying oboe at the Royal Academy of Music.
Keith has pursued a highly successful freelance career as an oboist, performing on a regular basis with Britain’s most prestigious symphony and chamber orchestras including the English Chamber and Philharmonia Orchestras. He has worked as soloist with the Thames Chamber Orchestra, and given numerous solo recitals on BBC Radio Three. His recording credits include Finzi’s Interlude for Oboe and String Quartet and wind octets by Mozart and Myslivicek. In 1994 he was appointed Director of the Thames Chamber Orchestra, conducting concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields, St John’s Smith Square and the Royal Albert Hall.
