The Lyric Orchestra presents a cheerful selection of music for the windy late autumn season. As the days shorten, they reach back into history with Grieg who masterfully mixes Baroque dance tunes with Norwegian folk, and then further back to the 18th century for the neat harmonies and energetic melodies of Vivaldi and Telemann. Moving forward to the 20th century, they’ll conclude with Holst, presenting charming British folk tunes through the lens of the string orchestra.
This Devon-based ensemble is led by violinist Patricia Calnan (see Book here now:), who played for years with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner. She and other members of the orchestra feature as soloists throughout the programme, which is:
Grieg – Holberg Suite
Telemann – Concerto for 2 violas (soloists: George Robertson, Lindsay Hughes)
Vivaldi – Concerto for 4 violins in B minor (soloists: Trish Calnan, Brenda Potts, Kip Pratt, Gabi Mills)
Concerto for 2 violins in A minor (soloists: Trish Calnan, Lucy Wiessler)
Concerto for cello in C minor (soloist: Jez Capey)
Holst – St Paul’s Suite
There’ll be coffee and cake available, as well as the normal bar.
