It’s Not Only, But Also, The Blues…
On the last Monday of every month, we celebrate the music that draws inspiration from the great tradition that is the blues. Most of the musicians and bands billed are based in Devon and the South West. At the end of each night there’s an open jam session where the musicians on the bill play with each other, and anyone else who’d like to play a tune or two. These nights are curated by local bass player, Mary Caffrey.
Vince Lee & Sophie Lord
Vintage blues and roots duo based in Plymouth. Vince has been playing and singing the blues in all its forms since the mid 80s. He has been a huge influence on the local music scene with his wide repertoire and virtuoso guitar playing. Sophie Lord was one of those who came under his spell. Returning to her hometown of Plymouth after 10 years working as a bass player in London, Sophie joined Vince in early 2022, switching from electric bass guitar to double bass in the process. Together they have gained a huge following on social media platforms by sharing their music videos reaching millions of people around the world. Their stripped back style touches on jump blues, calypso, swing and ragtime. Vince and Sophie have played in the USA at the
Topanga Blues Festival in Orange County, California and
Gator By The Bay Festival in San Diego.
Vince Lee’s Big combo is always a big draw at Not Only But Also the Blues; here’s a chance to hear these virtuoso musicians Vince and Sophie duo bring a new, creative expression to the blues.
The Robert West Band
This is a power trio which plays “pure shameless blues” with just a spoonful of rock ‘n’ roll. Influences include all the Kings: Marcus, Albert, BB… plus Clapton, Green, Hendrix,
Paul Butterfield,
Gary Clark Jr…
They’ll be playing standards and lesser-known numbers that cry out to be heard along with some originals, with Robert West on guitar and vocals, Richard Sandwell 5 string bass and Mick Tolley on drums and vocals.
