Maximum space for dancing to Ruth Rozelaar on bandoneon with this month’s special guest Mark Wyman
Ruth writes:
“For our fifth Milonga at the Ashburton Arts Centre, I will present you with a pianist! Mark Wyman from Holland will be known to those of you who used to come to Tango Mangos. He is an excellent Tango pianist and the collator of the Big Tango Fake Book, which is the go-to reference book for playing Tango A la Parrilla.
This time, we will get rid of the stage and push the piano into the middle of the dance floor, for you all to dance around us. Our focus is on bringing you a rich Tango programme; 75 minutes of traditional, danceable Live Music.
The live music will be from 3 – 4.15pm, and there will be traditionally DJ’d tango music for the rest of the afternoon. Dance space downstairs and seated listening space up in the gallery.
Ruth Rozelaar has undergone a self-directed and intensive 5 year long period of study, devoting 3 hours per day to Bandoneon practice, with the focus on playing A La Parrilla, for dancing. In January 2023, she began studying with Maestro Dibelo. She writes:
“I am honoured to be touring with such a grand maestro. Playing alongside him, diving deep into the tunes that I know so well from dancing, is an indescribably delicious experience. Just like dancers, we connect with each other through the music – every time it is new and exquisitely alive.”
