Harpland, is centred around Scotland and Migration and takes Scottish folk tunes with resonances to emigration and the Highland Clearances as a starting point. Ruth Wall grew up in Sutherland, which was massively affected by the Clearances, and she has been collating stories and tunes from the area for many years. She performs on three harps – the Scottish lever harp, the real clarsach (which is the rarely heard bell-like Gaelic wire strung harp) and buzzing Renaissance bray (which sounds like a huge sitar).Graham joins Ruth onstage and performs live FX and electronics transforming old Gaelic songs, reels and jigs from the Highlands, into something beautiful and minimalist, with a folk feel. At times it’s disturbing, at other times it veers into high energy and dance music.
