It’s the Mardi Gras on Saturday 10th Feb, 2018. More here.
To get you in the mood, there are Free! workshops this weekend 3 & 4 February, at the Arts Centre (West Street, TQ13 7DT, donations welcome):
Samba band, with Elfyn Jones, who writes: I’m leading two samba workshops in preparation for the Mardi Gras at Ashburton Arts Centre 12-2 this Saturday 3rd and next Saturday 10th February. I will bring surdos and other samba paraphernalia but you’re also welcome to bring your own percussion or if you play a loud instrument that stands a chance of being heard in the great outdoors then please feel free to bring that too! Anything you do bring should be portable particularly at the second workshop when we will need to be practising how to move with the drums! Earplugs (optional) will be provided.
New Orleans Street Band bring an instrument you can blow, and learn some funky brass band tunes with Andy Williamson, 12noon – 2pm, Sat 3 Feb. If you can blow a few notes on a sax, clarinet, trumpet, trombone or whatever, you’ll be able to join in. There’ll be some simple printed parts, or you can learn by ear.
Swing Dance Workshop with South West Lindy Hoppers (video right), Sunday 4 Feb, 12 – 2pm. Ashburton Arts Centre. Learn the dance steps that go with the great swing bands of the 1940s, ready for the Mardi Gras big night. Anyone can do this – the basic steps are really easy – throwing your partner over your head, or between your legs is strictly optional!
Mask and Lantern-Making Sunday 4 Feb, 2 – 4pm
The first one of these was last Sunday, but don’t worry if you missed it, there’s more this weekend. All ages welcome. There are materials and equipment provided, but please do bring your own – or if you have anything you’d like to donate, see the list at the bottom. We also having a Glitter Amnesty! Bring your old non-biodegradable glitter and we’ll use it (and dispose of it) in an eco-friendly way.
Any questions about any of the workshops, email mardigras@ashburtonarts.org.uk. Sorry about the late notice for these – they’ve all been pulled together in the last few days. Most important, please come! If any of them get too crowded, we’ll deal with that – what’s more likely is that everyone thinks someone else will go, and we’ll end up with just a handful of people at each.
All the above workshops are FREE – just turn up. Buckets for donations will of course be shaken.
