OUT OF ISOLATION

The Haldon Quartet  is delighted to play a live concert (albeit socially distanced) of works by two composers who wrote music in the confines of isolation, proving how the imagination flies free even in this situation.

Haydn was stuck at remote Eisenstadt for long periods at a time, away from family and friends. Granted, he was well catered for by Count Esterhazy, but the psychological effect of distancing from normality was very real. Op 20 no 4, written at Eisenstadt, starts out rather subdued but soon opens out into inspired realms of both light and shade.

Schumann’s isolation was more of an internal struggle with quite severe mental problems, the reason for which has not been definitively ascertained. He was a dreamer conceiving new and unexpected ideas in music and had a lasting influence on later composers. His 3rd string quartet, written in as little as two weeks, is sometimes reflective, sometimes edgy, and in the last movement euphoric in a slightly manic way.
