Sunday Improv Sessions
Every Sunday, 11am – 1pm
Usually in the Main Hall downstairs; occasionally moved elsewhere or cancelled, depending on what else is happening at the Arts Centre. If you’re making a special trip, email boxoffice@ashburtonarts.org.uk to check that it’s on.
How it works
Please arrive between 11 – 11.30am, as later arrivals tend to interrupt whatever rapport has been established.
Please pay £5 or £3 or a donation of whatever you can at the beginning of the session (ask about paying by card if necessary).
Anyone is welcome to bring your ideas, your instrument(s), play whatever is available, dance or move, or use your voice. Mics & amps are usually available if essential.
This is a free improvisation session. We don’t play tunes as you would in a typical jazz or blues jam session. It starts at the beginning, and usually continues without stopping until the end, although it might stop at any time by consensus.
Please listen to what others are doing and respond in a respectful fashion. There are usually no soloists here – everyone contributes equally. You can initiate ideas or try to influence the evolution of what is happening, but do so in a collaborative way rather than dominating. Sometimes it’s better to do nothing. Duos and trios can be good…
